ASH and Destrehan clash in Week 3 Louisiana Sportsline Game of the Week

By TheFireman89

The Louisiana high school football season has failed to disappoint through the first two weeks of the season. The third week of action looks to continue that competitive trend with a showdown between a traditional Class 5A powerhouse and another 5A team that looks to join the ranks of blue bloods in the classification as the Alexandria Trojans (2-0) host the Destrehan Wildcats (1-1).

The Destrehan Wildcats enter the matchup at 1-1 on the year with 23-20 loss on a last minute touchdown against the Catholic Bears in week one and a 31-0 win over the Bonnabel Bruins last week.

The Wildcats were without both their starting quarterback, Jackson Fields, and their starting running back, Shane Ward, in last week's win over Bonnabel. Starting in place of Fields was freshman A'ushai Smith, who answered the call by completing 5-of-6 passes for 72 yards and two touchdowns in the Wildcats win. It is unknown if Fields will be back on the field against ASH or if Smith will get his second start.

University of Michigan commit Phillip Wright III caught one of Smith's passes for a 30-yard touchdown and rushed two times for 66 yards and a touchdown.

Alexandria has been a force to be reckoned with in their two games so far, a 44-7 win over West Feliciana in their opener and a 41-12 win over defending state champion Union Parish last week.

While the Wildcats went to their freshman backup at quarterback last week, the ASH quarterback situation continues to be by committee as sophomores Karsen Sellers and Max Gassiott have shared snaps under center so far this season.

In the Trojans win over Union Parish, the two quarterbacks split snaps with Sellers completing 11-of-14 passes for 177 yards with two touchdowns, one passing and one rushing. Gassiott completed 7-of-9 passes for 52 yards and had a rushing touchdown.

The Trojans senior running back and LSU commit J.T. Lindsey carried the ball 15 times for 98 yards and had two touchdowns. Senior receiver Darius Washington led all ASH receivers with 142 yards on 12 receptions.
